When bringing your RV out of winter storage, it’s important to go through a detailed de-winterization process to ensure it’s safe and ready for the road.

Exterior & Structural Check

  1. Inspect the Roof & Seams – Look for cracks, leaks, or damage from winter weather.
  2. Check the Tires – Look for cracks, bulges, or signs of dry rot. Check the tire pressure and re-inflate to the proper PSI.
  3. Examine the Seals & Caulking – Check around windows, doors, and vents for dried or cracked sealant.
  4. Test the Awning – Make sure it extends and retracts smoothly and inspect for mold or damage.
  5. Look Underneath – Check for rodent nests, leaks, or loose components.

Plumbing & Water System

  1. Flush the Antifreeze – If you used non-toxic RV antifreeze, flush it out completely by running fresh water through the system.
  2. Sanitize the Water System – Mix 1/4 cup of bleach per gallon of water, fill the freshwater tank, run it through the system, let it sit for a few hours, then flush thoroughly.
  3. Check for Leaks – Turn on the water pump and open faucets to check for leaks.
  4. Reconnect & Test the Water Heater – Make sure the bypass valve is in normal mode and fill the tank before turning it on.

Electrical & Battery

  1. Reconnect & Charge Batteries – Test voltage and charge fully before reinstalling.
  2. Test All Lights – Interior, exterior, brake lights, and turn signals.
  3. Inspect & Test Appliances – Run the fridge, furnace, A/C, microwave, and water heater.
  4. Check Propane System – Inspect tanks, hoses, and connections for leaks using soapy water (bubbles indicate a leak).
  5. Test the Generator – Change oil if needed and test under load.

Engine & Drivetrain (For Motorhomes)

  1. Check Fluid Levels – Engine oil, transmission, coolant, brake, power steering, and windshield washer fluid.
  2. Inspect the Belts & Hoses – Look for cracks, wear, or leaks.
  3. Test the Brakes – Check brake pads, rotors, and fluid.
  4. Check the Air Filter – Clean or replace as needed.
  5. Start the Engine & Let It Run – Listen for unusual noises and ensure it idles smoothly.

Interior Cleaning & Safety

  1. Inspect for Rodents & Mold – Look in cabinets, under seats, and storage areas.
  2. Clean & Air Out – Wipe down surfaces, vacuum, and open windows.
  3. Check the Fire Extinguisher – Ensure it’s charged and accessible.
  4. Test Smoke & CO Detectors – Replace batteries if needed.
  5. Restock Supplies – First aid kit, emergency tools, and RV essentials.

Final Road Test

  1. Take a Short Drive – Test brakes, steering, and acceleration.
